Any tips about getting back to work Options

Hi all,

I am looking to get into employment after a long gap and looking for any tips dealing with the employment gap. filling in application forms which asking if you have had any sick days. I put 0 and didnt tick the disability box as I dont consider myself to be disabled as my RA is controlled (touch wood) though now I am worrying if this is correct. Well my GP says I am very healthy!Confused

Or if anyone is trying to get back in to work at the moment or has any stories or tips about them getting back to work. ThumpUp

Hello

I am pleased to hear that you are well enough to try and get back into work. Sickness and disability should not preclude you from accessing jobs but unfortunately there are still so many companies who take one look at an application form and if they see sickness or disability they do not take it any further. However, it can cause many problems later down the line if you do not declare your health issues.

I am responsible for employing people at the company I work for. I do not know what type of work you are looking for but we use employment agencies all the time to access new employees. Our philosophy is that it really does not matter what is put down on paper, we are just looking for people who can prove themselves by doing the job and fit in with our existing workforce. We have had many successful employees who do not look so good on paper but have proved excellent at their jobs. I think by working temporarily at a company it gives you time to see if you like them and the job and vice versa. Many of our temporary employees have been moved onto permanent status.

I know there are very few permanent full time jobs out there at the moment so maybe registering with a few employment agencies may help you. I hope you have some success soon.

thanks for your post. Its great to hear that you have a positive approach to recruitment and that you have managed to keep your job which I am sure is no mean feat, particularly at the early stages of diagnosis.

Unfortunately companies do have to think of their bottom line and they do think further down the line rather than the now, which unfortunately stacks against someone who has a chronic health condition rather than someone who is physically disabled. As for agencies they are only interested in their commission. There is no crystal ball, staff can get ill after employement. Most jobs have a probationary period where you can prove yourself and get a feel if the job is for you. if someone has chronic back problems then they will choose not to take a job that involves lifting. I am sure asmathics and people with heart problems dont declare their illness.

Unfortunately again, its had times all round with all the cuts. One needs to do what is necessary to survive.

WELL i never did go back as i with with the O.T EVERY week for months so chatted about it .
i might be fit enough now .But theres other things

i can keep going but it catches up then too tried to do anything .
i have good enjey leavels but need a good sleep to re do

my feet will hurt standing and back will play up

i help a friend and find thats enough .And also the other thing i look fine so i will get asked
and then there is no leavel of understanding off R.A and my overlaps and the raynaunds .

My hands play up in the cold as so my feet do

so am i employable ???? some people think yes!!!!! as i am told i am good at somethings !!!!and asked all the time to help someone .But no not really!!!!!!! what i do is enough .

i live on incapsty benfit I did work from the age of 15 too 54 with a yrs gap having Jamie

And may be won,t ever go back but might do the earning which you can do on top of the benfit ???????
but i could do but i could do it privatley but then its the paper work on top .

don,t think i would go back to work for a firm .Knowing full well i would get asked extra

Just to say i was board so i asked an firm who i worked for the police checks were still in hand
every thing else in hand so they did not have too re do even some of the training was still in hand

So i went in to do the tea trolly that gave the other carers more time to catch up .
its a big proffet making care home .

Anyway just too say the carers loved me going in but not the boss/s as then even unpaid .
they came up against something employment rules etc
So i gave that up in a hurry .

Just too say that put me off big time real paid work well ??????i just can,t be doing with it .

Chrissie, yes I agree, with a chronic illness it goes much more against you than having a physical disability. With a physical disability, you are not allowed to be discriminated against and rightly so, but with the unseen illnesses its just a case of "oh you will need too much time off" which isnt necessarily the case. I have cared for Amelie for 16 months and never had a sickness day, I'm not saying I havent needed it!! I just couldnt let them down. With appts Roy comes too and has her, or he stays home and has her with the parents consent. this suits me, I dont want to work for a company, its too stressful, and anyway, they probably wouldnt give me a look in lol!!! Good luck with your work search MsWoman, I sincerely hope you can find something that suits you, but please be careful if you dont choose to tell them about the RA and you have to have time off with the illness.

Hi Christine,

I can relate to that feeling of not having enough energy to be able to contribute enough. Which is the primary reason why I havent looked for work. However I am only in my 40s and have a lot of time left to work. Plus I would guess you have worked long enough your National Insurance contributions to get a govt. pension, i need to do another couple of years to get that. I am on incapacity too but with all the pushing they are doing I will not be considered ill enough to continue receiving it and one cant live on air.......

Hi Barbara,

Seven years ago I quit my job in a stressful office to become a foster carer, something which I had wanted to do for many years, I continued to work as a Learning Support Assistant as I needed to work school hours in order that I could take and collect children from school. I gave this up to solely concentrate on fostering but became bored after six weeks. I now work as a relief mid day supervisor in a special needs school, I have down graded in my job but I get so much satisfaction and less stress, I can also say if I can't work because i only get paid for the hours I do. I am 50 years old and hope to continue for a good few years. I wish you eery success in your job search, but if you are open minded about what you want to do hopefully something will come along.
